Tourists and Visitors

If you are visiting the Mossman and Port Douglas region, welcome. You are holidaying in the home of Australia’s iconic World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree National Park. The region is the traditional homelands of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji people. As custodians they have strong cultural and spiritual connections to the land and sea with a deep understanding of the environment.

Water is the community’s lifeblood and healthy waterways protect and nurture our fragile ecosystems. Although it looks like we have plenty of water, we need to conserve and manage it, especially during the dry season, which happens to be the time our visitors like to come here.

To preserve our ecosystems and marine environments we need to keep our freshwater flows strong. We hope you will work with us while you are here to help us keep the Mossman and Port Douglas region a beautiful place to visit.

So, what can you do to help us during your stay?

• tightly turn off taps in bathrooms and showers
• report any leaks to management or staff
• clean teeth using a glass of water rather than leaving taps running
• have shorter showers (4mins is recommended and saves 12 litres or 2 x 6 litre buckets per minute)
• request towels to be cleaned every second or third day – not every day
• request sheets to be cleaned at the end of your stay, if staying for a short period
• wash with a full load of clothes or full dishwasher, if staying in self-contained accommodation
• be mindful of water use in swimming pools, spas and when using beach facilities
• help keep our rivers and creeks clean and healthy by NOT using any soaps or detergents in waterways; and please place all litter in bins.
